The Origins of Coca-Cola
In 1863, a French scientist named Angelo Mariani had this wild idea to mix cocaine with red wine and market it as a fun, feel-good drink. Indigenous people in the Andes chewed on the coco leaf to get a little buzz. They also used it to suppress their appetite and some cultures even use it in religious ceremonies.
