The warden of Leavenworth was a former reporter named Billy Biddle who had a flare and a respect for showmanship. He approved Stroud's ownership of a solitary canary and the construction of a canary cage. It seems like prison in like 1920 wasn't quite as hellish as prison is now, but it definitely got to the time period. I think there's a lot of different tales coming out from the modern prison system.
