The idea that we need to escape ourselves is a really important piece of being human. There are a huge number of traps we can escape from ourselves and then not deal with our problems. To get to the other side of this chasm requires us to do something in preparation before we cross the chasm, and that is to identify the sacred. I found an anchor of the sacred that i needed to serve i was part of myself. So when i go through nihilism and have a crisis of self, part of myself is anchored to the sacred. Joe is a complexity researcher, cognitive scientist, and evangelist for regenerative culture design. We invited him onto the show because we felt that our ideas about adult development, rites of passage, and overcoming the chasm of nihilism strongly resonated with his thinking and work on cultural evolution.
