Is There a Locus of Control in Pain?
Heart argues that whatever the source of pain in the body, the experience of pain largely happens in the brain. She says if something urgently demands your attention, the brain is usually going to find a way to at least partially ignore pain until the important business is taken care of. Heart sites phantom limb pains as an example of how pain can be regulated up or down by various types of mental stimulation apart from just stuff happening to your hand inside the box.
