Alex and Nina were raised in Canada, but spoke Bulgarian as their first language. For Christmas they would make a dish called bonita that's phyllo dough, butter, feta cheese, yogurt and egg on top of like layer over layer over layer. Their mother used aluminum foil to write down fortunes for the year when she made it. Alex: "I didn't feel like we were ... poor or rich"
