The word i is considered the most commonly used word in the english language, at least according to the list which i referenced. The pronunciation has changed a little bit over the centuries, but we still use it the way the anglo saxons did over a thousand years ago. There was also a distinct possessive form called the genitive form in old english. If i wanted to show possession, i could say, this is keven straud's podcast. But if i wanted to use a pronoun like es or mes I had to use a distinct form - mean. And of course, that word evolved over the centuries into the modern words my and mine.
