CHAPTER

The Eureka Moment

When Alex was 27, he discovered that sound waves traveled through the air. He began to wonder whether electric currents could be made to mimic a sound pattern of compressions and refractions. If they could, any sound could be transmitted electrically. His obsession with telegraphy now overshadowed his commitment to deaf education. When school is not in session, he goes back to the backwoods of Canada where his parents are still living.
