The Origins of Greek Drama
The hero of a tragedy must suffer to this day that remains the essence of a tragedy. He had to bear the burden of what was known as tragic guilt. The basis of that guilt is not always easy to find for in the light of our everyday life. It is often no guilt at all. And so, we have this way in which characters are given destinies or told what their destinies are either by other figures or by themselves. Sometimes that destiny is realized by their embracing it. But other times that destiny is realizing precisely by their avoiding it. They get caught in it. So that's the story in its full broad arcs and I will go back to you now.
