i asked to meet my a spirit animal and guess who showed up? A panther. shamanism recognizes there is an ordinary, consentual reality which can be perceived. The imagination really gets short shrift in our culture. If something is imaginary, people discount it with fantasy. But i think one of the things that our ancestors knew that we really need to rediscover is that the imagination is an organ of perception.

John Mabry is a United Church of Christ pastor and is the Director of the Spiritual Direction Program at Chaplaincy Institute. He is the lead singer of 2 bands in the Bay area and is the author of many novels and books on theology, spirituality, and spiritual guidance.
