The Science of Phages

The 1920s and 30s were the years of the purges when you could be denounced and arrested as an enemy of the people. Unfortunately, George Eliaver, the scientist pioneering Phages and Lavrenty Beria, Stalin's General Secretary, hated each other. On the wall of the small museum in the Institute, Nina points to a photo taken shortly before his arrest. In 1937, Eliaver was executed. The science, however, continued. With me is Professor of Microbiology, Martha Clokey.
