The Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918-1919
Ukrainian nationalists tried to seize Shemeshil in the Polish-Ukrainian War of 1918-1919. The siege proceeded as one would expect, with starving defenders and intermittent attacks on individual forts. During World War II, the division between National Socialist Germany and Soviet Russia ran right through the middle of Psemashil. Ukrainian intellectuals were keenly interested in an independent Ukraine.
