When cognitive therapy first came out, there were only five or ten of us in the world back and a number of us who were going to as weekly seminars. I kind of thought they'd be hostile and critical and unappreciative of this wonderful amazing new developments I was describing. And sure enough, audiences were just like that. They were really kind of hostile and rigid and argumentative. As well as expected. But what I didn't realize was I was creating that subconsciously. Now my positive expectations are functioning as self-fulfilling prophecies. We need a way to make people aware of these belief systems that they have.
