The Relationship Between Doctor and Patient
Gawande talks about three types of relationships between doctor and patient. There's paternalistic where doctors are the medical authorities aiming to ensure patients receive what they consider best. Then there's informative, which is the opposite. The ideal one is called interpretive in that it helps the patient determine what they want. It's kind of a shared decision making process.
