We start with a definition of what the API needs to do. And we map them out by identifying the operations in a protocol agnostic way. We then pick our API styles, REST, GraphQL, GRPC. This prevents a common problem from emerging where the API team is always blocking the rest of the organization from moving forward. It's all about communication. So if we start with the design first and then we can deliver some mock implementations of our design before we actually do all the heavy lifting... it's really great.
