Introduction

Anthony Comstock was one of the most famous anti-vice crusaders of the late 19th century. He founded the New York Society for the suppression of vice in order to enforce public morality. In 1873, he successfully persuaded Congress to pass an anti-vice law that criminalized mailings tied to birth control or abortion. The Supreme Court and other courts actually limited the reach of the Comstock Act over time.
