Even if we were open source, completely open source, you would have like very large difficulty to make sure that the operating system running in the device is the same as what you downloaded. This is a problem you have with hardware with hardware in general. You don't have granted. By the way, twizzo recently they got some people distributing fake twizzo device like with backdoor inside. And as there is no integrity mechanism, there is no way for people to distinguish a real twizzo from a fake one.
