Freemasons and the Construction Industry
The masons lodges were similar to other guilds, like guilds of weavers or tailors or gold smiths. What was different about them was that they had one or maybe one or two big employers in each country. The church was certainly the biggest single patron of building projects. This created a sort of greater solidarity among these different workers of different levels. There seems to have been something more of a spirit of equality and inclusion among these building workers.
