In the earlier stages, a teenager or a young adult will only rarely consider much less the idea that they have a mental illness and go for a professional help. Usually the person keeps quiet about it. It's common for such a person to fall behind and often to drop out of school and later to give up their employment. They may self-medicate on recreational drugs and that just makes it worse because they're already becoming psychotic. Now they turn to recreational drugs or alcohol and all of a sudden they begin to self defeat and cannot cope nor can the people who have to support them have easy time coping.
