In the past millennium when we were, you know, occupied by foreigners that this sort of attitude seems to have come in. Look at the ancient paintings in Ajanta Elora etc. You see people very attractive good looking people who have reasonably dark skin tone. This is these are attitudes that have crept into Indian society along with other defects in the past 1000 years. When a society is under foreign occupation, it is enabled.
