Do You Think the Original Audience Would Have Known the Imagery?

Do you think the original audience would have understood the imagery? It's always a very interesting question because my my professor Jimmy Don James D. G. Don often ask these questions and he called it the context of meaning. He said to me well I'm really not concerned about whether graphic people in an audience are going to catch it, it's context of meaning is author and audience and context combined so that it's something that could be understood.
