The Little Man of the Eye
The word itself that's used for that, some suggest it's actually ap off the word man in the diminutive form. And so by saying apple of the eye the pupil, what they're saying, more literally, is the little man of the eye. If i'm the apple of your eye, then i'm close enoughto a god who is looking at me lovingly, and i can see myself in his pupil. There's nothing else he's focused on. It's just me, because he loves me.
