In 19 72, at the very first international summit on the environment in stockholm, advocates talked about environmental rights. In 19 94, costa rica wrote it into its constitution. There are a hundred and ten countries that guarantee humans the right to a healthy environment in their constitution. The united nations rights council just in october 20 21, declared access to ahealthy environment a human right.
In several countries around the world, including Ecuador, New Zealand, and the U.S., some people are trying to protect the planet using a legal concept called “rights of nature” – infusing the law with Indigenous understandings of Mother Earth.
