Episode #145 ... Bergson on Laughter pt. 1 - History

Philosophize This!

CHAPTER

The Incongruity Theory of Bergson

The incongruity theory says that we laugh when our expectations are violated or simply when we're just surprised about something. What makes us laugh is not in the incongruities in itself, but within the context of what's being said. We don't laugh just because two things that are unrelated come together. The way it's commonly described is that we laugh in the resolution of thatincongruity.
