There's a bit of a pattern here in established modus operanda, if we want to use that. Once the language is well established, it almost has guaranteed longevity. Many of these dead languages are either too niche to spread, or just plain bad languages that no one wants to use. On the other end of the spectrum, you have super stars like p hp and java. Despite sometimes very great effort, they won't be going away any time soon.
