The Supratonic in Western Music Scales
The supratonic is a major second from the fundamental tonic in both scale types. The sub-dominant has two dominant relationships, one with each tonic. In minor melodies which are climbing when we want the seventh degree to lead,. we raise it a half step to bring it closer to the second tonic in minor scales. Both names and numbers of the scale degrees only represent their most key functions but can be used for wider musical context. We don't want to feel limited by these descriptions or describe every note that we get of a note.
