The Origins of Uncle Sam

The character of Uncle Sam was created in the 1850s. It has a lot to do with the War of 1812 and meat packer Samuel Wilson. The troops on the line would refer to the meat as Uncle Sam's meat because they knew it came from this meat packer whose first name was Sam. There is kind of a precedent for having a personification of your nation.
