Most people move in constant opposition to themselves because they are afraid that if they don't oppose themselves all the time something awful will happen. So when the human being developed the power to be aware of himself, he fell from grace. The modern equivalent of that would be the police car about to raid a bad night club and coming with its siren full on. And everybody in the club gets out. You buy your talk of charity and duty to one's neighbour, you're just introducing confusion into the empire. For a attempt to eliminate self is a positive manifestation of selfishness.
