In the 1730s and 40s, enslaved people would devastate crops. There were whole sections of newspapers dedicated to fugitive slave advertisements. A man named Macandal is thought to have been African born. He eventually ends up being captured and he's burned at the stake in 1758. But just as they're kind of trying to set him on fire, local legend has it that he transformed himself into a mosquito and flew away.
