The climate was fluctuating too wildly during the paleolithic for a hierarchy to be possible or functional outside of exceptional micro climates. There's also a really interesting and growing body of evidence from human physiology that strongly suggests that humans evolved in a negaltarian context. We're working on the assumption that people don't just organize into hunt or gather bands or kingdoms or republics because they have particular values. And we're not just making these assumptions based on some gut feeling or ideology.
