In 1980, in a very waff-cited paper mind that I published in Psychological Review, I was able to derive adaptive resonance theory from a thought experiment. Because the hypotheses don't even mention mind and brain, it is a universal solution to the learning problem. It asks how any system can learn quickly without forgetting just as quickly. If you've studied AI today, which is just the latest way to talk about neural networks, both back propagation and deep learning do experience catastrophic forgetting.
