Stalin's Resignation After the German Invasion
The first six days of the war were absolutely catastrophic from the Soviet point of view. Stalin was desperate for information, but communication with the front was broken off because the Nazis were advancing so swiftly. He left them all there and went to the Dodger by himself, which was one characteristic. Usually he took the cronies for a very late supper, as we know from the memoir literature. And then he didn't come to work the next day. So not having him at any time let alone during the invasion was paralyzing for the regime.
