Odysseus and the Goddess of the Dawn

Some have seen this as the moment where Odysseus lets go of the desire for immortality. I think that's the great refusal. He refuses to try to be a god. Now there are good reasons for that which are very subtly alluded to even in book five of the poem. What happens if you're immortal and you end up with a divine goddess as your consort? Your in danger. And we all remember how that did not end well.
