Walking the Victorian Streets
I think in the early 20th century we all started to move indoors for various good political and social reasons. And so I think the life that's lived outside is still an oddity to us. If 85% of Londoners were working class in the 19th century, many of them had homes that they did not want to be in because they were so revolting. Therefore it was a much more externalised society. Every single source you find reveals fantastic characters, amazing real life plots. There are tiny little vignettes that end up in three lines from a newspaper. So I just think it's a whole world of drama and intrigue and people who weren't necessarily self-conscious.
