What's Up With the Notices to Air Mission System?

The Federal Aviation Administration announced that there was a nationwide grounding of planes and thousands of delays caused by a system failure. The Notices to Air Mission System is responsible for distributing like bulletins to pilots about potential hazards in the sky. There's some components inside of this system that are three decades old. And it kind of just raises the question how such a small innocuous blender could bring down that entire notification system.
