The swiss confederation was one of the most intricately convoluted political units in europe. There were three main language groups, french, german and ital. A few native sw Swiss believed that it would be far better to integrate into a single state and then make a treaty with france. The plan was for the french to annex the city of molhaus in jan ary, and that would be the signal for a pro-french uprising. But that is not how things went.
