The Terror of Religion
Sigma Freud said that religion will exist as long as human beings are afraid of death. I mean, related to this is the idea of religion as a terror management system. So much of religion is coping with the idea of death and what might come after this earthly life. It's amazing how funerary rights stay the same over the course of millennia.
