After his 1951 Princeton graduation, John Sutter was offered a job at Wellington Management Company. By 1965, the traditional mutual fund industry that he described had changed and not for the better. Investors were abandoning conservative-balanced funds in favor of high-flying aggressive stock funds. The index fund is not invented until 1974.
