The Cognitive Dissonance of Fear

A shortcut to resolving the cognitive dissonance is to just believe that the fear is true and that the world is a scary place. When we have an unwanted aspect of ourself, then we will project it onto other people. This is a classic defense that Freudians identified in the early 20th century called projection. Projective identification is the furthering of that process by socializing the other to agree with the projection.
