The Evolution of Play

In Second Life, people design avatars for themselves from scratch. They're kind of playing with identity in that same way as role playing games. There's a deep scholarship about play that comes out of anthropology and also sociologist Huizenga wrote this famous book called Homo Ludens which is about how play really is the origin point of human culture. But somewhere along evolutionary time, our presumably, like everything else in evolution, we developed some mental machinery for some reason and repurposed it for another reason.
