The Nephilim would have thrived around the turn of the last century. The US government, and particularly Theodore Roosevelt, may have taken their existence seriously. There are some very strange stories from the late 1800s about people coming across humanoid bears on the frontier. Teddy Roosevelt had man named Bowman on trip once and he recalled setting out to trap in a rugged river valley that this is what was then known as Beaver territory. They went up a mountain pass where a lone trapper had been killed by an unidentified beast. A half-eaten remains were found by some mining prospectors who passed by his camp only the night before.
