In the digital age there is a new kind of power born out of data and data analysis. This power is related to the ability to predict and influence behavior. If you have enough predictive power through data or data power, you can transform it into economic power. You can also sell access to people and access to people's attention. And because we weren't so familiar with this kind of power, it crept up on us. We thought that the litmus test for whether something was a monopoly was if it could really up their prices and not lose any customers. But it turns out that companies like facebook and google are supposedly free, in that you pay something else, you pay your data.
