Erlito, a Chinese City in a Class of Its Own
There don't seem to have been any formal cemeteries of the kind that were later devoted to kinship lineages during shang times. Over time, this hierarchical division of space and life style seems to have grown more distinct. The most striking thing about erlito itself isn't so much in what the site had as what it didn't have. Erlito then was in a class of its own. It had no peers. That, more than anything else, was what seems to have been new about this stage of china's late prehistory.
