Machiavelli says there are three constitutions: monarchy, aristocracy and democracy. He takes up terminology Roman writers would have inherited from Aristotle. Machiavelli's theory of the mixed constitution completely departs from how his contemporaries understood it. The model of the Renaissance republican constitution was Venice - but he rejects that as wrong.
