The Unknown Girl
I think he's a great editor of his own work. He leaves you sometimes of what seems like quite an obscure picture and you have to go back over the second last paragraph we were often talking about. Like Henry James. And that's why he's a beautiful writer to read aloud. It took me about four readings to work out why she had run away from her home, what has happened to her? Because it's fantastically complete. But actually, he never ever minded. He's the only writer I think I've known. Sadly not the before he's going out next week.
