Holman Day is a pretty textbook earnest white liberal intellectual. That's the picture that you get of this guy in this article. He paints a pretty desperate picture of the educational standards and general culture, which as we've already said are not accurate. These people seem to have been reasonably well educated by the standards of the day and the area.
