Until recently, about half of all researchers expected AGI to be at least decades away. Superintelligence isn't a long-term issue; it's even more short-term than AG climate change and most people's retirement planning. Mentioning the asteroid distracts for more pressing problems such as AI bias or nuclear winter. It's hard for us to fear what we've never experienced before with EG models but I believe that there are innocent explanations for their super-intelligence denial.
