How Do We Know What We're Missing?

How often do you think situations like this are playing out on time scales we can't imagine and in ways we can never really fully understand? I'd say that anthus is one of the more obvious ones, at least in my opinion, because it's so old and so weird compared to what else is here. But probably for less obviously different plants, like maybe silene, this could be happening over and over again, constantly. The appellations are critically underserved as far as botanizing and recording s goes.
