To Change China - A Biographical Approach
i was inspired by a book that jonathan spence, a professor of chinese history at yale university for many years. And the accepted wisdom of spence's book was that westerners failed to change china. But i think if you read the book more closely, you'll find that many of his characters had a significant impact on the relationship. I thought the biographical approach would make it interesting and appealing to students as well as broader audiences.
