The Trouble in Eyemouth
In eyemouth, the church retained its position of control. It was continuing to exact what was a punishing tax. A local man called william spears led a peaceful rebellion and it culminated in the ending of the paying. But although there was this determination to break away from the tax, it didn't end the ill feeling. And eye mouth remained a sort of simmering, hot bed of ill feeling between the church and the local people. The trouble in eye mouth rumbled on for another 30 years,. until eventually the lord advocate had to intervene - he broke ut a compromise.
