The Benefits of Columnar Databases
Columnar databases lay data on disk, they lay it by column. The biggest benefit actually tends to come from compression. These things work very efficiently when you've got a single column. But the interesting thing probably these days is that the utility that comes from the cloud providers is probably more important than the actual underlying database itself.
